My First String Job: Step-by-Step Beginner Guide

Goal: help you complete your first tennis racket string job confidently—without advanced tools—while avoiding the classic beginner mistakes that cause poor tension, frame stress, and elbow pain.

WHO THIS IS FOR

  • Home stringers with a drop-weight, crank/lockout, or electronic machine
  • First-timers who want a clean, consistent, arm-safe result
  • New stringers
  • Those interested in stringing tennis rackets

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • Stringing machine: drop-weight (most common for home), crank, or electronic
  • 2 fixed or floating clamps (match your machine)
  • Starting clamp (strongly recommended)
  • Awl (tapered), cutter, lighter (for poly tip), needle-nose pliers
  • Measuring tape (or use pre-cut half sets)
  • Overgrip + dampener (optional, for final feel)
  • Frame: check grommets; replace cracked ones if needed
  • String suggestions for your first job (easy, comfy, forgiving):
  • Synthetic Gut: Prince/Solinco/Wilson Syn Gut 16g
  • Multifilament: Wilson NXT / Tecnifibre MultiFeel 16g
  • Hybrid (optional): Poly main 17g @ 48 lbs / Syn Gut cross 16g @ 51 lbs (only if you’re comfortable handling poly)

Before You Start

  • Pick tension: 48–52 lbs is a safe starter range.
  • Pre-stretch (manual) for multi/syn gut: gently pull 10–15 seconds to reduce tension loss. (Skip for full poly.)
  • Map the pattern: 16×19 and 18×20 are most common. Identify tie-off holes (usually larger grommets).
  • Inspect frame: note the mains start side and skip holes (printed on throat or in the manufacturer’s pattern).
  • Cut out old strings safely: snip in a star pattern around the head to avoid frame warp.
